Background

Configuring a service to start automatically when the system boots — or, conversely, disabling this feature — involves the use of Linux runlevels. Commands

These examples use the MySQL daemon (mysqld as an example, but these commands will work with any service.

To check the configured run levels for a service
chkconfig --list mysqld

To configure a service to automatically start when the system boots.
chckconfig mysqld on

To configure a serve to NOT automatically start when the system boots.
checkconfig mysqld off
