Overview

When you install Visual Studio 2010, you can choose to install SQL Server 2008 Express Edition. However, selecting this option does not install Managment Studio. This article explains how to add Management Studio to a VS2010 installation.

Procedure

1. Download the SQL Server Management Studio installation from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7593

2. Run the setup. In the Installation Center dialog, click "Installation", then "New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation" (the first "link").

3. When the installation wizard gets to the "Installation Type" step, choose "Perform a new installation of SQL Server 2008". This is counter-intuitive, yet correct.

4. Continue through the installation wizard till you get to Features Selection, where you can choose Management Tools - Basic.
